From several gold veins and bulges from rivers out of the mountains gold was won. Nowadays are the goldmines of Zloty Stok all that is left over from this era, while the first written proof of the existence of the mines dates from the 13th century.
In the town Zloty Stok, which means Golden Hillside, was the mining the most important means of income. It has even a tradition that goes back more than a 1000 years in time. There was a real gold fever in Zloty Stok, because the ground around the place was full of precious metals, one of which was gold.
From several gold veins and bulges from rivers out of the mountains gold was won. Nowadays are the goldmines of Zloty Stok all that is left over from this era, while the first written proof of the existence of the mines dates from the 13th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century the mines were modernized. So there was electricity applied and there came a railway to link Zloty Stok with Kamieniec. In 1996 were the first tours organized around the mine. The tours takes you to the museum, the dead gallery, the Gnome (according to the legend this Gnome guards the gold reserves) and to the underground waterfall. The dead gallery is a hallway, dug out of one of the upper levels, where the mine workers were tortured when they were suspected of stealing the gold. Very impressive to visit. There are also boat trips through the mines. Other activities are: wall climbing, gold panning, making gold coins and acquiring a goldmine workers certificate. When visiting the mine, we would like to advise you to make a reservation in advance. The tour can eventually be given in English and German.
Tip: Wear strong hiking shoes or sports shoes and warm clothing. It is namely also in the summer quite chilly and vary damp.
