The presumption is that Hitler here wanted to build secret underground weapon factories and at the same time a tunnel system with all the necessary facilities. However, the project was never finished.
The Walim mines are in the north western part of the Owl Mountains. They belong to the imposing Project Riese of Adolf Hitler. The project still attracts many tourists and lovers of history because it is up to this day a puzzle what Hitler exactly was planning with this project.
The presumption is that Hitler here wanted to build secret underground weapon factories and at the same time a tunnel system with all the necessary facilities. However, the project was never finished.
When you visit the Walim mines you get an idea how enormous Project Riese was. Through the many kilometres of tunnels which have been built in this area and the machineries which still are to be found, you can see with your own eyes in what kind of terrible conditions the forced labourers and prisoners of war had to work. By the way you can only visit the tunnels with a guide. If you do indeed pay a visit to the Walim mines, then be sure also to visit the adjoining museum.
Tip: Take warm clothing with you if you visit the Walim mines. The average temperature is only 5 degrees, even in the summer.
